U.S. Release Date: 10/17/78
Running Time: 1:33

Give John Carpenter much of the credit for igniting the slasher film genre. Before Jason Voorhees, Freddy Krueger and countless other movie maniacs, there was Michael Myers, the murderous boogeyman who chased Jamie Lee Curtis through this and two other Halloween films. (There are seven in all!)

Carpenter co-wrote (with Debra Hill), scored and directed this series starter. It is one of the true modern horror classics thanks in great part to the emphasis on atmosphere and suspense rather than blood and gore.

Halloween appears on most horror fans' lists of favorite scary movies. It's a screamer!
